I’ve always wanted kids. I had always imagined myself having 2 kids, maybe 3.
My husband and I got married in August, 2016 and soon after, I decided to get off of my birth control to give my body a little re-set. My husband and I had been dating for about 6 years before getting married, so we were ready to try for a baby very soon after our wedding.
To start, I was not sure I would be able to get pregnant. I had issues with ovarian cysts as a child and was on birth control at the age of 16 to help regulate my cycle. I would go months without having a period so the doctor suggested going on the pill to “normalize” things…
Y’all, I was on the pill for almost 12 years!!! TWELVE! Looking back now, I wish I would have gotten off of it a lot earlier. But, I didn’t know any better.
Lucky for us, it only took us about 6 months to get pregnant. Now don’t get me wrong, 6-months feels like forever when you are trying to get pregnant. However, I know there are couples that try for years with no luck. We were lucky.
At the time, I wasn’t having a period, so I was SHOCKED when the home pregnancy stick showed a positive result. Obviously, I called the doctor right away.
At 8 weeks pregnant, I went in for our first doctor appointment. I told my husband he didn’t have to come because I didn’t think it would be a big deal. The nurse listened for a heartbeat, but couldn’t hear one. She scheduled me for an ultrasound the same day to check on things and see how far along I was.
The sonographer started with a standard ultrasound, but was not able to get a good view. She then did a trans-vaginal scan (which I knew NOTHING about and did not expect) to get a better view. Pretty quickly she found the heartbeat! It was such a relief, although it still didn’t feel real. At this point, I was wishing I had told my husband to come along!
The sonographer continued the exam and after (what felt like forever) a while, turned and asked, “before I show you the images, I have a question for you…do twins run in your family?” I told her that my sister has fraternal twins but don’t know of any other twins in the family. She turned the machine so I could see it, and introduced me to Twin Baby A and Twin Baby B. I couldn’t wait to share the news with my husband!
First Trimester with Twins
During my first trimester, my husband and I bought our first home and had decided it fix it up a bit. I was also teaching first grade full time. I was TIRED. Some of the fatigue was life and the other, I believe, was growing the twins. 🙂
Other than the fatigue, my boobs were VERY sensitive and sore, and I was pretty irritable for the first month (sorry husband!). However, everything else was great! I didn’t have any morning sickness and overall felt great.
Before getting pregnant I ate healthy and kept pretty active, so other than adding prenatal vitamins, limiting my coffee (yes, I still drank coffee) and removing wine from my diet, I didn’t have to change much. I was LOVING the pregnant life and watching my body change.
