For the last 3 years, I’ve been trying out different natural skincare products, including natural shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, face wash, moisturizer, body lotion, etc. Below is a list of my CURRENT favorites!
I chose to switch over to non-toxic skincare and body care once I was pregnant. I didn’t want the products I was putting on my body, to soak into my skin and reach my baby (which CAN happen FYI). So, I started experimenting and haven’t stopped since!
Making the switch has been a long process and still continues today. I am currently using all non-toxic products, but continue to try different brands and products as I go.
I do NOT consider myself a beauty blogger! However, like many of you, I’ve tried a LOT of different products, and below are some of my current favorites. Everyone’s skin is different, so I cannot guarantee you will love these products for your skin type. But, I think it’s a good place to start!
Along with switching to clean beauty, I’ve completely switched over to non-toxic cleaning products. Read about my favorite DIY home cleaners here (with a free printable) and my home cleaning schedule here!
A few ingredients I make sure to avoid in my skincare products:
- Fragrance- the ingredient(s) that give the product the distinct smell. The issue with fragrance, is companies do not have to disclose what’s going into the “fragrance.” Companies could be adding chemicals, hormone disruptors, stabilizers, dyes and preservatives. Fragrance is know to be linked to cancer, reproductive toxicity, allergies, sensitivities, respiratory distress and so on. (Source #1) (Source #2).
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS)- this ingredient is used to create the suds in some products. This ingredient “may be contaminated with potentially toxic manufacturing impurities such as 1,4-dioxane” which is classified as an carcinogen.” (source- EWG’s website) This ingredient can cause skin irritations, especially with those that suffer from eczema or rosacea.
- Parabens- this is used as an additive to products. It is a known hormone disrupter. There is strong evidence of it being a human endocrine disruptor. Can cause skin allergies. (Source- EWG’s website)
In addition to avoiding these specific ingredients, I also use the ThinkDirty or EWG app to check other ingredients in products I may not recognize. These apps give products a score of how toxic or non-toxic the product is based on ingredients. I highly suggest using these, and maybe start scanning your current products to see what’s inside!
My Daily Skincare Routine:
AM Routine
Facial Cleanser
Toner
Vitamin C
Moisturizer
Eye Cream
**Currently looking for a sunscreen to add to my AM routine. **
PM Routine
I use a chemical peel 2x a week and a physical scrub 1x a week. Generally, I use the peel every Monday and Wednesday, and a physical scrub on Friday. Days in between I use a toner or a mild, hydrating mask.
Facial Cleanser
Tone OR exfoliate OR mask
Serum/Oil
Eye Cream
Natural Shampoo and Conditioner:
Beautycounter – I love the daily shampoo and conditioner. I have fine hair and this shampoo and conditioner doesn’t weigh it down at all. It still suds without the use of SLS and smells great.
Price: $26 a bottle, but lasts my husband and I, 2-3 months.
Natural Face Wash:
I always wash my face in the morning when I wake up, then again at night before I go to bed. I NEVER skip a day.
Beautycounter’s Countertime Lipid Defense Oil- I currently use this in the morning when I wake up. If you’ve never used an oil as a cleanser, it takes some getting used to, but leaves my skin feeling so soft. I use it once a day.
Price: $49
Osmia’s Black Clay Facial Soap- this bar soap is AMAZING. This is the only face soap I’ve found that keeps my cystic acne under control. This soap is great if you have issues with perioral dermatitis or acne-prone skin. It lasts me about 2-3 months. I use it twice a day in the summer and once a day in the winter. From my experience, it can be drying if you use it too often in the cooler months.
(If you purchase this soap, I suggest getting the soap saver as well to keep the soap lasting longer).
Price: $24. You can purchase from the Osmia store directly, or Amazon.
Other face cleansers I’ve tried and liked:
Osea’s Ocean Cleanser- Good for normal/combination skin.
Price: $48
Osmia’s Rose Clay Facial Soap– another great option from Osmia. Good for dry or sensitive skin.
Price: $24
Natural Body Wash:
Aleavia Body Cleanser– LOVE! My husband and I both use this body wash. It has a mild scent, contains just7 pure ingredients, and seems to last forever. I use this for shaving my legs, etc. as well. =) This soap also has prebiotics in it which is a bonus for your skin! I purchase off Amazon. (it comes at a discount using subscribe and save if you are signed up for that). Price: $19.99.
Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap- when I run out of my Aleavia cleanser, I use Dr. Bronner’s Castile soap. There are a variety of scents to choose from, but I normally stick to unscented.
Price: around $20. This soap lasts a long time and has so many uses!
Natural Body Lotion:
The Honest Company Pure Face and Body Lotion– I generally purchase the fragrance free option. The Sweet Almond smell is nice as well, but scores a 3 on EWG. The Fragrance Free option scores a 0, so I tend to navigate towards this option, because I use it on my kids as well. I use this lotion on my body, hands and feet. It goes on silky and soaks in well. You can purchase from Target or Amazon.
Price: $6.67 (a subscribe and save option for Amazon Prime members).
Natural Facial Toner:
I generally use toner twice a day after washing my face. Once in the morning, and once in the evening. I use it before applying my serums or moisturizer.
CocoKind Raspberry Facial Toner: the only ingredients are water and raspberry vinegar. I’ve used this for a while with no complaints. I purchase from Amazon or Target.
Price: $14
Indie Lee CoQ-10 Toner: I got a trial size of this through an order on AILLEA, and just finished the bottle. I liked this toner enough to purchase once my CocoKind is gone! I liked the little tingle it gave my skin, and love that it has Hyaluronic Acid in it, which provides moisture to the skin. You can purchase through Amazon or Indie Lee’s website.
Price: $34.00
Natural Face Moisturizer:
I use moisturizer in the morning after applying Vitamin C Serum.
Osmia’s Purely Simple Face Cream- this is great for sensitive skin. It is on the more expensive end and doesn’t seem to last very long (a month or two?) so I’m currently looking for something else that compares.
Price: $60
Natural Exfoliators:
I use the chemical peel 2-3x a week and the physical exfoliator 1x a week.
Chemical Peels
Beautycounter Counter+ Overnight Resurfacing Peel – this is the strongest peel I use. I’m using it to help even out my skin tone and minimize pores.
Price: $63
Physical Exfoliators
Laurel Honey Berry Enzyme Facial Mask- I use this once a week. The company has since updated the formula, and I have NOT tried the new one so I cannot speak to results. I sure love the original mask though! Purchase from Detox Market or Laurel’s website.
Price: $54 (lasts a while!)
Natural Face Masks
I use a mask every once in a while when I am trying to target specific issues such as dryness or dull skin.
True Botanicals Resurfacing Moisture Mask- I LOVE how my skin feels so smooth after doing this mask. I received this mask in a trial size and will probably purchase the full size jar once its gone.
Price: $65
Natural Vitamin C
I use every morning after cleansing and toning.
Beautycounter All Bright C Serum– using to help improve skin radiance, fade acne/dark spots and improve the texture of my skin.
Price: $79 (it lasts a while!)
Others I’ve tried:
Versed Brightening Serum- You can purchase this from Target! I liked this serum, but needed something stronger for my acne scars and dark spots.
Price: $19.99
Cocokind Vitamin C Serum with Sea Grape Caviar- another good option! You can purchase this at Target as well!
Price: $17.99
Natural Facial Serums and Oils
What’s the difference between a serum and oil you may ask? A serum is meant to target specific concerns, such as replenishing and restoring the skin. An oil is meant for moisturizing the skin and can be used as a replacement of a moisturizer.
I currently only use the serum listed below, because it works both as a serum and an oil.
Laurel Anti-inflammatory Facial Serum- this is a serum, oil and moisturizer in one! It goes on pretty thick, so I only use it at night. It smells amazing. Purchase from Detox Market or Laurel’s direct website.
Price: $88 (again, it lasts a long time)
Other oils/serums I’ve tried and liked:
True Botanicals Pure Radiance Oil- I really liked this oil, however it is more expensive than other oils. If you are looking to splurge, this oil is great!
Price: $110
Natural Deodorant
I have tried A TON of natural deodorants, and think I have finally found one I can purchase consistently. Hallelujah!! My husband and I both love this!
Hume Supernatural Deodorant- I’ve tried both the Desert Bloom and Fragrance Free. Both work well, but the Desert Bloom is my favorite.
Price: $14
Natural Hair Styling Cream
I am very minimal when it comes to hair styling, using just a shampoo and conditioner and sometimes a styling cream. I don’t use anything else. (Still haven’t even tried dry shampoo!!)
Innersense Whipped Cream Texturizer- helps eliminate frizz and flyaways.
Price: $22
Where to Purchase Natural Skincare:
Detox Market- has skincare, makeup, wellness, body and hair, etc.
Beauty Heroes- shop skincare, makeup, body, hair, etc. This one is a new one for me. I haven’t personally shopped here yet.
Aillea– skincare, makeup, wellness, hair, body, etc.
Target- shop the brands, “Versed,” “Cocokind,” and “Honest Company.“
My wish list:
These products I haven’t yet tried, but have heard good things!
